They appear in various forms \u2013 spheres, fibres, irregular fragments \u2013 and are now ubiquitous in air, water, soil and living organisms.&lt;\/p&gt;\">microplastics<\/span> in the human body?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn our study<strong><sup>1<\/sup><\/strong>, published in <strong>Foods<\/strong>, we carried out a clinical investigation into the elimination of <span class=\"glossario-term\" data-definition=\"&lt;p&gt;Plastic fragments ranging from 0.1 \u00b5m to 5 mm in size, originating from primary microplastics (pellets, cosmetic microspheres) or secondary ones (breakdown of larger plastics). They appear in various forms \u2013 spheres, fibres, irregular fragments \u2013 and are now ubiquitous in air, water, soil and living organisms.&lt;\/p&gt;\">microplastics<\/span> through the use of a natural fibre derived from <strong>Procambarus clarkii<\/strong> (PCC-<span class=\"glossario-term\" data-definition=\"&lt;p&gt;A natural fibre derived from chitin, found in the exoskeleton of crustaceans such as Procambarus clarkii. It is used for its ability to bind microplastics, adsorb metals, and for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.&lt;\/p&gt;\">chitosan<\/span>). We analysed the presence of <span class=\"glossario-term\" data-definition=\"&lt;p&gt;Plastic fragments ranging from 0.1 \u00b5m to 5 mm in size, originating from primary microplastics (pellets, cosmetic microspheres) or secondary ones (breakdown of larger plastics). They appear in various forms \u2013 spheres, fibres, irregular fragments \u2013 and are now ubiquitous in air, water, soil and living organisms.&lt;\/p&gt;\">microplastics<\/span> and bioplastics (particles smaller than 0.1 \u00b5m) in food and in the human body. We detected traces in blood, the liver, the brain and the endocrine system, suggesting possible negative effects on both the immune and hormonal systems.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is there scientific evidence of their presence in other parts of the body?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cA previous Italian study<strong><u><sup>2<\/sup><\/u><\/strong>, published in 2024 in the <strong>New England Journal of Medicine<\/strong>, identified <span class=\"glossario-term\" data-definition=\"&lt;p&gt;Plastic fragments ranging from 0.1 \u00b5m to 5 mm in size, originating from primary microplastics (pellets, cosmetic microspheres) or secondary ones (breakdown of larger plastics). They appear in various forms \u2013 spheres, fibres, irregular fragments \u2013 and are now ubiquitous in air, water, soil and living organisms.&lt;\/p&gt;\">microplastics<\/span> in carotid plaques in more than 50% of cases, linking them to a risk of heart attack, stroke or death nearly five times higher over a three-year period.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What are the implications for everyday health?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c<span class=\"glossario-term\" data-definition=\"&lt;p&gt;Plastic fragments ranging from 0.1 \u00b5m to 5 mm in size, originating from primary microplastics (pellets, cosmetic microspheres) or secondary ones (breakdown of larger plastics). They appear in various forms \u2013 spheres, fibres, irregular fragments \u2013 and are now ubiquitous in air, water, soil and living organisms.&lt;\/p&gt;\">Microplastics<\/span> accumulate in human tissue, triggering chronic inflammation, oxidative stress and potential neuroendocrine damage. The concept of <strong><span class=\"glossario-term\" data-definition=\"&lt;p&gt;A perspective that combines personal well-being and respect for the environment. It involves caring for the body, mind and relationships as parts of a broader ecosystem.&lt;\/p&gt;\">inner ecology<\/span><\/strong> is therefore particularly relevant; these are no longer distant phenomena, but ones that affect our physiological balance.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">You also write about a natural fibre \u2013 how does it work?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe observed a 45% increase in <span class=\"glossario-term\" data-definition=\"&lt;p&gt;Plastic fragments ranging from 0.1 \u00b5m to 5 mm in size, originating from primary microplastics (pellets, cosmetic microspheres) or secondary ones (breakdown of larger plastics). They appear in various forms \u2013 spheres, fibres, irregular fragments \u2013 and are now ubiquitous in air, water, soil and living organisms.&lt;\/p&gt;\">microplastics<\/span> expelled in faeces after a single administration of 0.8 g of PCC-<span class=\"glossario-term\" data-definition=\"&lt;p&gt;A natural fibre derived from chitin, found in the exoskeleton of crustaceans such as Procambarus clarkii. It is used for its ability to bind microplastics, adsorb metals, and for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.&lt;\/p&gt;\">chitosan<\/span>, compared with the control group. Furthermore, the effect was selective: the <span class=\"glossario-term\" data-definition=\"&lt;p&gt;A natural fibre derived from chitin, found in the exoskeleton of crustaceans such as Procambarus clarkii. It is used for its ability to bind microplastics, adsorb metals, and for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.&lt;\/p&gt;\">chitosan<\/span> bound mainly to synthetic fibres such as rayon, PET, PP and polyethylene, also altering the shape and size of the particles eliminated.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How, then, is the approach you recommend structured?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cA twofold strategy is needed:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Limit intake<\/strong>: Reduce plastic in food, packaging, water and air (<span class=\"glossario-term\" data-definition=\"&lt;p&gt;Pollution present in enclosed spaces (homes, offices). This includes dust, microplastics, volatile compounds (VOCs) and residues from synthetic materials.&lt;\/p&gt;\">indoor pollution<\/span>).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Promote elimination<\/strong>: Support natural purification through a fibre-rich diet, physical activity and healthy everyday habits.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Talking about <span class=\"glossario-term\" data-definition=\"&lt;p&gt;A perspective that combines personal well-being and respect for the environment. It involves caring for the body, mind and relationships as parts of a broader ecosystem.&lt;\/p&gt;\">inner ecology<\/span> today means recognising that the external environment is mirrored within our own bodies \u2013 we breathe in and ingest plastic every day. A number of particles become trapped in tissues, in the gut, and even in the brain. The idea is that we must focus not only on environmental but also personal detoxification. And, above all, on prevention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of course, broader studies are needed to determine optimal doses, timing and long-term benefits.
