They appear in various forms \u2013 spheres, fibres, irregular fragments \u2013 and are now ubiquitous in air, water, soil and living organisms.&lt;\/p&gt;\">Microplastics<\/span> detected in blood, breast milk and the lungs of healthy individuals,<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>PFAS (the so-called \u201cforever chemicals\u201d) traceable in almost 100% of the Western population<\/strong>,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Increased systemic inflammation markers in individuals with prolonged exposure to environmental toxins.<br><br><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In other words, <strong>we fall ill the same way the planet does<\/strong>.<strong>\u00a0Not metaphorically, but literally, increasingly interfering with the natural physiology of our metabolism<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><span class=\"glossario-term\" data-definition=\"&lt;p&gt;Plastic fragments ranging from 0.1 \u00b5m to 5 mm in size, originating from primary microplastics (pellets, cosmetic microspheres) or secondary ones (breakdown of larger plastics). They appear in various forms \u2013 spheres, fibres, irregular fragments \u2013 and are now ubiquitous in air, water, soil and living organisms.&lt;\/p&gt;\">Microplastics<\/span> and target organs: a systemic problem<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The gut, as we\u2019ve seen, is often the first point of contact \u2013 but it isn\u2019t the only one. A 2024 study<strong><sup>3 <\/sup><\/strong>published in <strong>The New England Journal of Medicine<\/strong> identified <strong><span class=\"glossario-term\" data-definition=\"&lt;p&gt;Extremely small plastic particles, smaller than 0.1 \u00b5m. They are more difficult to detect and can penetrate cells and deep tissues.&lt;\/p&gt;\">nanoplastics<\/span> and <span class=\"glossario-term\" data-definition=\"&lt;p&gt;Plastic fragments ranging from 0.1 \u00b5m to 5 mm in size, originating from primary microplastics (pellets, cosmetic microspheres) or secondary ones (breakdown of larger plastics). They appear in various forms \u2013 spheres, fibres, irregular fragments \u2013 and are now ubiquitous in air, water, soil and living organisms.&lt;\/p&gt;\">microplastics<\/span> in the carotid plaques of patients at cardiovascular risk. <\/strong>The presence of these particles was linked to an increased risk of acute events such as heart attack and stroke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The nervous system may also be involved: certain types of plastic release <span class=\"glossario-term\" data-definition=\"&lt;p&gt;Chemical substances that interfere with the hormonal system. Found in plasticisers, pesticides, cosmetics and certain food-contact materials.&lt;\/p&gt;\">endocrine disruptors<\/span> that affect hormonal balance, potentially influencing mood, metabolism and cognitive function \u2013 and impacting other tissues, including the lungs and reproductive system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Environmental symptoms: When diagnosis expands its horizons<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Chronic fatigue, recurrent inflammation, sleep disturbances and hormonal imbalances \u2013 common, sometimes underestimated symptoms that are now increasingly being interpreted through an environmental lens. The body doesn\u2019t always tell us \u201cwhat\u2019s wrong\u201d \u2013 but it does often tell us \u201cwhat it\u2019s accumulating\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is in fact growing interest in an integrated approach to prevention, connecting:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><strong>Nutrition<\/strong><\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><strong><strong>Healthy lifestyle habits<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><strong>Purification (Detox)<\/strong><\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><strong>Monitoring of environmental exposure<\/strong>.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A cultural change (more so than a clinical one)<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>If we truly fall ill like the planet does<\/strong>, we must begin to rethink health as part of ecology, and vice versa.<strong>\u00a0Looking after ourselves doesn\u2019t just mean eliminating symptoms,<\/strong> but creating an environment that supports life, <strong>both within and around us.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Personal sustainability means:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><strong>Looking after ourselves without extremism<\/strong><\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><strong>Recognising the body\u2019s signals as reflections of the environment<\/strong><\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><strong>Making everyday choices that have a positive impact on future generations<\/strong>.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As the German philosopher Feuerbach once said, \u201cWe are what we eat.\u201d Today, we can safely add: \u201cWe are what we eat, drink and breathe.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The body and how it \u201creads\u201d pollution The concept is not merely symbolic:\u00a0the scientific evidence1,2 is now extensive.Medical and environmental research shows that our bodies collect and retain traces of the pollution surrounding us.
